Dangerous Weight Loss?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: Hi! As a new year’s resolution, I vowed to lose weight. I have been losing 2 lbs. average per week. I am now 145, and at 5 foot 9 inches, I think this is a perfect weight for me. My diet is pretty strict. For breakfast I eat a 100 cal yogurt and a 150 cal oat bran muffin. I also take a Centrum women’s vitamin. Then I will walk on the treadmill @3mph on a 10% grade. The treadmill says I burn 220 calories but I don’t think it’s that much. For lunch I will have 180 cal soup, another oat bran muffin, and a cup of raspberries. Or I might have sushi. It depends on the day. For dinner I might have grilled vegetables and salmon. My total daily calorie intake is probably close to 1000. I read online that this is terribly unhealthy and “anorexic” (which I don’t want to be considered). Various internet sources said that it is deadly, and at the least you’ll lose your hair, muscles, periods, and become really tired! I am now scared for my health. If I knew my diet would have been this unhealthy, I wouldn’t have done it. My question is, how unhealthy is my diet? How many calories should I be eating? And how do I start maintaining my current weight without gaining any back?
Thanks a lot!
I’m 18 by the way.
Answer: 2lbs per week is too fast. Losing between a half to 1 pound per week is pretty good.

Your diet is pretty strict, mainly on the carbs side. It was good call to take the Centrum vitamins (you might not be getting all the energy/protein you need from your diet, but at least you’re getting your vitamins and minerals right).

It’s a pretty well balanced diet, and the only thing I would say is to try some meat (preferrably poultry) every other day and increase your carb intake. For example, forget the oat bran muffin for lunch, and eat some rice, potatoes (not fries) or bread. Also, try to snack, I mean, try to eat every 3 1/2 hours. You won’t be so hungry and you’ll increase your calorie intake a bit.

Also, if you want, you can really start eating a lot more and just increasing your amount of daily exercise, i.e., running (0%) instead of walking for example, or just walking longer. Try to perform different exercises, not just climbing, so your work different groups of muscles and do not put strain always on the same joint (climbing is not good for knees in the long run).

Also, at 18, you might still be growing. Do not restrict your calorie intake too much.

The average adult woman should eat between 1800 to 2000 calories per day. But it all depends on how much you exercise really. The thing is: exercise more, eat more, exercise less, eat less. However, do exercise; it’s good.

Help?!?! Weight Loss to Look Good in a Bikini…?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: Okay so I’m 14, 5′7, and around 180 lbs. I really want to lose weight around my thighs and belly so I can swim at the lake in my bikini. Can someone please help? I know I will have to exercise and eat healthy. But I don’t know what exercises to do or how much I should be eating. I really want to do this to help my self-esteem and to gain confidence. Does anyone know any good exercises that I can do to get in shape? And what should I be eating and what should I stay away from? Please and thank you(:
Okay, do things like slim fast work?
Answer: Exercise is not nearly as important as eating right, so i would suggest a low-calorie diet. So if you eat around 2500 calories a day normally, you should try for 1500 calories a day. You can basically eat as many fruits and vegetables as you want because most of them are at least 90% water. (Not to mention they work miracles for you).

Stay away from MEAT, any salty, greasy things like chips and french fries, anything artificial (if you CAN stay away from it..) dairy (especially products made from cow’s milk) however it’s alright in small amounts.

For exercise I would just try going on really long walks. I’ve been walking 2.5 hours average per day and it feels awesome. Running isn’t my thing so I’m not going to tell you to do that…
Good luck sweetie :)

Exercise, Every Day Vs. Every Other Day, for Weight Loss and Muscle Toning?

A tough weight loss question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: I had a baby 3 1/2 months ago. I gained a lot of weight but have lost half of it already. I still have 25 pounds to lose, even though I look pretty good for just having my third baby!

I want to lose the extra fat, strengthen and tone my muscles (tummy, arms and legs) and hopefully get my hips to go back from being spread.

This is what I currently TRY to do everyday.
20 minutes of elliptical training
7-10 min stretching routine that targets the arms, legs, back and sides
40-45 min toning routine that targets the arms, legs and tummy using no more than 3 kg weights.
5-10 min of various crunch exercises on the ab lounge

Is it ok that I do all of this everyday or should I do something else? What could I do differently? How long before I start to see results? Losing inches? Seeing muscle tone?

*My legs were pretty sore yesterday after woking out Sunday but I did my routine yesterday anyways. They are still sore today. My tummy and arms feel just fine. I have also adjusted my diet and calorie intake to help shed the pounds.

Answer: Do 30 to 45mins of cardio at least 5 times per week instead of 20mins, as fat burning normally doesn’t kick in until after 20mins of cardio.
Toning routine ok but you need to increase the resistance (weight) over time to force muscles to grow more. Remember the more underlying muscles you have the more calories you burn to maintain the muscles. Fat is also burned in muscle so makes sense to build your muscles up. They are not sore as you are too used to the 3kg weight. Don’t worry about increasing the weight upwards as you won’t grow like a man! You haven’t the testosterone levels to do so.
Crunches ok but also do some deep core muscle work such as the plank, side plank etc
You shouldn’t train any muscle which is sore as you are hampering the recovery of the muscle. This leads to overtraining, exchaustion etc and is the main reason why people do not stick to a routine. When using weights it is not advisable to train any muscle group more than once per week. So if you are doing squats or lunges for legs today, you wouldn’t do them again until 1 week from today. You need to split your routine up so that you are covering your whole body and not just your arms, legs and tummy. Do some work for your chest, shoulders, back etc as well. So on rest days from legs you would do one of these instead. Also take a rest day every 2 or 3 days to help you recuperate. Eat healthily as you are doing and you will see the benefits soon. Good luck

Currently: Age: under 21 Over 16, weight 330 lbs. 6 foot tall. ????? Please advice, and tell me some diet tips?!!???!?!?!?!? THHAAAAAANNNKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Answer: run every day, if your legs are sore from running then stop until they heal. If your legs are sore from works outs you still have to run… other than that everything looks fine for losing weight.

run for a mile to start, (you have to dedicate yourself)
every week or 2 add another mile…

Weight Loss Fast? Will This Work?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: ok so if i eat 1200 calories a day (ex. complex carbs, protein, veggies) and exercise 5 days a week (ex. 20 min pilates 2x a day and an hour of walking) will i be able to lose 12 pounds in 3 weeks? ordo i need to exercise more during the day? i really want to tone up and look good in a bathing suit by june 27. im 5′5 a girl and weigh 146 pounds.
Answer: Yes.
Make sure you drink enough water, since you will be putting a strain on your system, especially in Summer, (at least eight 8oz glasses, but 10 would be better).

Also try to balance out those 1200 calories to include a snack or two, and try to have the most calorie meal for lunch, not dinner.

MOST importantly, don’t get too obsessed with it, if you don’t lose the full 12 pounds. 10 will still be a major accomplishment, and 2 pounds won’t make that big a difference in how good you will look.

Best of success to you!

Why is Swimming So Good for Weight Loss?

Filed under: weight loss — Tags: — Tracy @ 7:02 am

A tough weight loss question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: i like swimming and i just wonder what good does do for my weight loss
Answer: Yes, you can lose weight by swimming. It is a form of exercise. Swimming uses most od your main muscle groups. When you swim breaststroke or backstroke, you’re burning about the same number of calories as a fast walk or a slow jog. However, swimming does have a reputation for being less effective than other forms of exercise when it comes to weight loss. Remember, though, moving and exercising is better than sitting around doing nothing.

Females, 100% Guaranteed Weight Loss Theory, Would You Try It?

A weight loss question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: Your man (you trust him) determines what you wear. At home he has you naked or very little clothes or in a too small Hooter’s outfit…. In public you face the threat of being told to wear clothes that are too tight..too short… OK you feel uncomfortable with this humiliation of being told what to wear and you do not feel comfortable being naked/exposed at home therefore you start losing weight.
Answer: That just sounds like kinky fun, not like a weight loss plan. Tough to do at my house with the kids around though.
