How Long Until I Start to See Weight Loss Results from My Workout/diet?

What a great weight loss question:

Question: I bike to the gym, about 10-15 minutes, then I go on the treadmill and do this: Do intervals for 5 minutes, then after that set it at 4.5, and every five minutes increase the speed by .1, so by the time I’m done I’m at about 4.9/5. I usually go for about 25 minutes. Then I bike home, which is about 15 minutes, maybe a bit longer since there is a steep hill. I do this 5 days a week.
I use weights for my arms so they tone a little better, and I try to do this every time I am at the gym. I quit my ab/pilate workout because I was told that it didn’t matter if I did it - I had to lose weight before you could see my abs anyway. I’ll continue it once I’ve lost a little more weight.

I was 155lbs about 2.5 weeks ago, and I’m about 150 now and plan to go down to 135 (I’m 5′7). Is what I’m doing alright?

Also, I eat healthy - cut out carbs/calorie drinks/most treats. I stick to protein, like fish and chicken, yogurt (sometimes after I work out) fruits, and such. Thanks for your help!

Answer: Hi Tegan 11. Your physical activities and diet plan seem fine and don’t forget to rest ok? Losing weight also requires a little patience. Most people often complain about diets and exercises that never worked because they have no determination to begin with. Give your body time to react to the changes. Your diet lacks green and leafy vegetables. drink lots of water and not too much meat. You should also eat foods that burn belly fat.

Are Headaches During Weight Loss Normal?

What’s this week’s question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I weigh 360 pounds. I weighed 250 two years ago and I got up to the weight I am now. I decided to go on a diet and from what the calculators have been telling me, I eat about 1700 calories a day which is probably 1300-2000 less from what I normally eat. I also decided to cut out caffeine cold turkey this last saturday.

This is my diet. Honey nut cheerios in the morning. Tuna for lunch. And Turkey Sandwhich, salad, banana, yogurt, and apple sauce in the evening. Maybe im eating something that would cause the headached.

Now I have small dull headaches. There not bad but its been a all day occurence. Ive been drinking water and caffeine free drinks and I was just curious if this is normal. Im also going for 3 pounds a week to lose weight. The headaches started Saturday night and they have continued through now going on and off. Im also on computers all day long and in class since im in college. I do wear glasses and I havent had a check up in 2 years. Any help would be much appreciative.

Answer: Ahem, it’s the caffeine. You are going through withdrawal. Happened to me as well.

Dangerous Weight Loss?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: Hi! As a new year’s resolution, I vowed to lose weight. I have been losing 2 lbs. average per week. I am now 145, and at 5 foot 9 inches, I think this is a perfect weight for me. My diet is pretty strict. For breakfast I eat a 100 cal yogurt and a 150 cal oat bran muffin. I also take a Centrum women’s vitamin. Then I will walk on the treadmill @3mph on a 10% grade. The treadmill says I burn 220 calories but I don’t think it’s that much. For lunch I will have 180 cal soup, another oat bran muffin, and a cup of raspberries. Or I might have sushi. It depends on the day. For dinner I might have grilled vegetables and salmon. My total daily calorie intake is probably close to 1000. I read online that this is terribly unhealthy and “anorexic” (which I don’t want to be considered). Various internet sources said that it is deadly, and at the least you’ll lose your hair, muscles, periods, and become really tired! I am now scared for my health. If I knew my diet would have been this unhealthy, I wouldn’t have done it. My question is, how unhealthy is my diet? How many calories should I be eating? And how do I start maintaining my current weight without gaining any back?
Thanks a lot!
I’m 18 by the way.
Answer: 2lbs per week is too fast. Losing between a half to 1 pound per week is pretty good.

Your diet is pretty strict, mainly on the carbs side. It was good call to take the Centrum vitamins (you might not be getting all the energy/protein you need from your diet, but at least you’re getting your vitamins and minerals right).

It’s a pretty well balanced diet, and the only thing I would say is to try some meat (preferrably poultry) every other day and increase your carb intake. For example, forget the oat bran muffin for lunch, and eat some rice, potatoes (not fries) or bread. Also, try to snack, I mean, try to eat every 3 1/2 hours. You won’t be so hungry and you’ll increase your calorie intake a bit.

Also, if you want, you can really start eating a lot more and just increasing your amount of daily exercise, i.e., running (0%) instead of walking for example, or just walking longer. Try to perform different exercises, not just climbing, so your work different groups of muscles and do not put strain always on the same joint (climbing is not good for knees in the long run).

Also, at 18, you might still be growing. Do not restrict your calorie intake too much.

The average adult woman should eat between 1800 to 2000 calories per day. But it all depends on how much you exercise really. The thing is: exercise more, eat more, exercise less, eat less. However, do exercise; it’s good.
